After an all night long installation trip π I want to write some info/tips about this “easy” task.
The goal is to install TomTom 5.10 on a brand new Qtek 9100. This PDA/smartphone is a nice gadget with Windows Mobile 5 (the Windows Mobile 2003 “evolution”). All operations will be made trough ActiveSync 4.1.
The fighting plan, from the manual pages, is to install ActiveSync 4.1 downloaded from the Microsoft site on a fresh WindowsXP SP1, installing TomTom 5.1 and putting into PDA with ActiveSync. Easy. |
Ok, but the TomTom installation wizard died before reaching the installation end on WindowsXP. Adding the SP2, changing hardware and trying previous ActiveSync versions will don’t help. Damn π another simple operation that become a nightmare :)Making many searches on Google and after many experiments/combinations I have found this solution:
- download the 5.10 upgrade from TomTom (you can find the ppcup510.zip or the ppcup510.exe version)
- run the ppcup510.exe updater to uncompress it and launch setup.exe
- minimize the installation wizard and do not end the process
- leaving the wizard running will leave on the filesystem some installations temporary files
- under nvappapp you can find four cab files to copy under a temporary folder on the Qtek 9100
- at this point you can exit from the previous installation wizard
- search into your TomTom installation media a file called language.cab (itaf.cab for Italian female voice, nor.cab for Norway voice, etc…) and copy it under the same temporary folder on the Qtek 9100
- go on Qtek 9100 and with your file manager execute all five previous cab files with no particular preferred order
- under programs, you can finally find the TomTom application installed and ready to run
That’s all. Usually, you can connect an external bluetooth GPS receiver using COM7 (the serial link over bluetooth). If you can’t see the TomTom shortcut on your today start page, go to start->settings->personal->today and under items tab, enable the TomTom flag.
This issue is generated by the great integration between TomTom, ActiveSync and Windows Mobile 5.
Impressive π

It is much easier then installing individual cabs. Simply copy the tomtom cd content onto your computer and run setup from there. It will not error out then and you can install it, then run the upgrade without issue.

Hi!
And how can I install the maps? The normal setup won’t work here.
greetings,
Armin

Hi Armin,
from the installation menu, you can find an option to install on local hard disk folder. After this step you can copy the created folder into the Qtek memory card.
Right? π

Come posso fare?
Grazie
Paolo · June 9, 2006 at 15:41

Thank you, and Molto Grazie, Great instructions Paolo,
just one more thing, for those wishing to copy the maps manually
be sure to copy them to a folder that is in the root directory of the storage card, eg StorageCardTOMTOM

Ciao ragazzi,
Help me!!!!
Paolo · August 29, 2006 at 14:36
Ciao Lello,

Paolo · October 29, 2006 at 16:56

buon giorno a tutti.

Ciao Paolo,
I have a Qtek 9100. I would like to set-up Tom Tom.
The 9100 does NOT come with a built-in GPS receiver, correct?
I understand I could integrate a bluetooth gps receiver.
Is there one such a thing as a miniSD gps receiver? What are my other options?
Paolo · September 17, 2007 at 09:55
Ciao Daniel,
you have to buy a GPS receiver bluetooth (it’s a wireless technology). You can search on ebay (or in some electronic shop/supermarket) for the receiver…
You can also buy the TomTom bundle (the software AND the receiver), take a look here for more informations…
